The Market Lane

Simple, small, and understated. When it comes to city centre pubs, it’s rare to find one that offers exactly what you want – the basics, nothing more and nothing less. And that’s what makes The Market Lane so important to the Newcastle city centre pub circuit.

Found on Pilgrim Street, it’s the perfect place for a lunchtime drink, a quick break from Saturday shopping, or as a meeting point for the start of a big night out.

Soak up the atmosphere whilst watching football, or visit before catching a match at St’ James’ Park.

It also has a great nickname, with a great story behind it, too. Legend has it that the Irish bricklayers who built much of Newcastle in the 19th century used to leave their hods (or ‘monkeys’) in the passageway as security against their bar bill.

So, next time you visit The Monkey Bar, you’ll know exactly where that name came from.
